Jays Pounce on Wells
A week ago, David Wells got smacked around good by a minor-league team. Last night, he got smacked around good by a big-boy team. The Blue Jays hung five quick runs on the Sox and Wells last night in the first two innings, and cruised to an easy 8-4 victory. Home Run Derby night at Fenway as Rios, Molina, and Vernon Wells went deep for Toronto; and Ortiz, Dustan Mohr, and Wily Mo countered for the Sox. Wily Mo swung the bat well, and for a night at least, made fans forget about the Arroyo trade. Boomer was on the receiving end of some lusty boos --in his post-game press conference (wearing his classy PokerStars.com hat) Wells joked that he thought they were screaming 'Booooo-mer...'
Sox are now 6-2. Yankees blew out the perpetually pathetic Royals yesterday, 12-5. Unique pitching line of the night: Orioles' Daniel Cabrera -- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 9 BB, 10 K. Through nine games, Oriole pitchers have given batters 55 free passes. Somewhere, Leo Mazzone is chomping on a few Pepcids.
